Shelby White and Leon Levy Archives Initiative

The Hispanic Society of America
New York City

In 2024, the Foundation gave multi-year grant support to establish the Shelby White & Leon Levy Archives Initiative at the Hispanic Society Museum & Library (HSML).  The project will preserve HSML’s photographic archive and dramatically increase online accessibility to these rare materials, transforming how researchers, educators, and the public engage with the collection. The new archive will unveil detailed visual documentation of 19th and early 20th century Spain, Latin America, and the Philippines, providing a window into a world rarely seen before. By safeguarding thousands of prints and negatives dating back to 1840, HSML will ensure that the irreplaceable visual records of Hispanic culture will endure for generations to come.
